Who we are
Founded in 1971, WOCCU is the nonprofit apex association supporting cooperative financial institutions to reach underserved markets. Globally, WOCCU has developed demand-driven products to expand access to financial services, advocated for an effective regulatory environment and supported inclusion and social responsibility--all rooted in our cooperative principles.
What we do
WOCCU provides technical assistance: 1) at the national level, through legal and regulatory advocacy for financial inclusion, 2) at the institutional level by working with credit unions, other financial institutions, and financial support services, and 3) at the individual or business level. Our programs take a locally-driven systems approach, enabling financial services integral to delivering sustainable impact.
World Council activities and services are conducted through our three-pronged structure:
- WOCCU Global Programs promote sustainable development of local, well-managed member-owned and governed financial cooperative institutions to empower millions of marginalized people. We partner with public and private donor agencies to strengthen financial inclusion and reach, bring innovative fintech partnerships, facilitate job creation through entrepreneurship and enable climate solutions finance for vulnerable and underserved communities.
- The trade association advocates internationally to achieve better legislative and regulatory outcomes for credit unions and their members, provides education and global networking, and champions the credit union and cooperative financial institution model worldwide.
- The Worldwide Foundation of Credit Unions supports Global Programs, member education and training, and disaster relief.
